A review of Bryans Of Headingley Ltd by Karl Payne written on Thursday 21st of August 2008
Quite frankly, I was appalled by both the service and the QUANTITY of food. Everyone in Leeds knows of Bryan's fantastical prices so when they offered a promotional voucher in the local paper I decided to pay them a visit (I certainly wouldn't if I had to pay full price!). We were greeted pleasantly enough and were seated at a booth. The waitress, (I use the term loosely) came to take our order. 2 of us had a voucher so we ordered the dish on promotional offer. A fillet of Haddock and Chips, described on the menu as being "for the smaller appetite". However, the corresponding price isn't for the smaller appetite! The dish is normally priced at £8.80 so I assumed it would still be a reasonable portion. Welllllll, when it arrived at the table I thought they'd brought me a kids meal in error. I kid you not, I have never been so taken aback in a restaurant. Novelle cuisine has nothing on Bryan's. The plate they were presented on was a max of 8inchs across. The fish although adequate enough was surrounded by a paltry portion of mediocre chips. A friend who came with us doesn't actually like fish so ordered a portion of chips and a portion of beans. £2.45 they charge for a portion of chips and I don't exaggerate when I say there wasn't even one medium sized potato on the place. His beans at £1.45 a portion were equally miserly. Both my friends meals arrived. I wait a further 5 minutes to get mine, then the bread and butter came, shortly followed by the sauces with our pot of tea, another 5 minutes after that, just after my friends were finishing off - the scraps that we ordered with the meal turned up! Appalling service. When pointing out their deficiencies to the manageress, she couldn't have cared less. "If you wanted more chips you should have asked for them" was her response. You mean to tell me I HAVE TO ASK if I want a full and adequate portion?? I could have bought a 10 kilo sack of spuds for that price! On the issue of charging £8.80 for the micro-portion we were advised that "you could have upgraded for £2 more" Oh so you charge £10.80 for a regular sized portion of fish and chips - so that's alright then is it? The owner must live as a recluse on some caribbean island! Ironically, the voucher was supposed to be promotional to bring in more custom. I won't eat there again if it is the last chippy in Leeds..
